A2

Nothing has changed at The Park, I think, looking around the familiar, somewhat jaded lobby as I make my way to the lift that takes me to A2. The doors are thrown open and I step back. This is not what it once was. At all. Its has interiors that will stay in my memory: distressed, but stylish. Everything is wood and beautiful. Designer Gunjan Gupta has brought un-finished into fashion, with exposed pipes that I half expect to rumble with flowing water, potli stools, half kathran sofas and counters. This is a dark space, even during the day, the lighting is muted. On one wall, a video installation reflects the theme of A2 – flowing water. Quite engrossing to watch as I wait for my food. My lunch begins with the most exotic fries I’ve ever had: Truffle Parmesan Fries. Love that cheese and the subtle flavour of truffle. Just as I think I’m going to finish them all, the raw, freshly cut and cold Negri arrives. Like most Japanese food, it is simple yet technically perfect. Personally, I prefer the salty Salmon as compared to the Hamachi and Tuna. The Japanese love their sea food. Prawn and Water Chestnut Skewers arrive, and I’m quite enchanted with the large prawn, strong Kabayaki sauce and the moist crunch of the water chestnut. All three go well together. My senses are longing for some vegetarian food and the Bao arrives right on cue. Taking a bite, I realize the outer, chewy tasteless dough hides a secret deliciousness within: eggplant and kimchi. Dessert, though, is not Japanese. My brain points out that A2 serves World Cuisine, and I should be happy with the Goat Cheese and White Chocolate Mousse. The first taste I get is from the sour-ish goat cheese and then, slowly, the sweetness from the white chocolate shows itself. I leave A2 with the diversity of this dessert lingering in my taste library. Pluses and minuses: A well thought out space, A2 is more than just chic interiors: it has food and beverages to match. Must try: Sashimi, Sushi, Maki Spider, Soba Noodles with Tempura, Passion Fruit Semi Freddo Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.

Khandani Rajdhani

There’s nothing remarkable about Khandhani Rajdhani’s décor. The restaurant has straightforward, practical, dark furniture, a few mirrors here and there, and some glass etching work at the entrance. I notice that the air conditioning in some parts doesn’t work very well. Maybe it is because of the packed tables inside and the waiting crowd outside. Those seated at their tables are busy with their food, perhaps a bit overwhelmed at the variety and the speed of service.  The waiters are quiet, using only sign language to communicate. Before my thali is loaded, I wash my hands with warm water poured on them with a beaked surai and collected in a brass vessel held below. My food arrives. Each waiter knows which ones are his katoris and where he is supposed to place his chutneys. Nothing I say or do can change the location of my food. I am presented with Keri Kulfi Dhokla: shaped like a kulfi, spongy like a dhokla, with a touch of raw mango tang and slight sweetness from a sprinkling of saffron infused water. I experiment with a dash of red garlic chutney and find that the dhokla is quite flavoursome on it#39;s own or with the green chutney, if I must.   Challenging my taste buds into action, the Dal Bati Churma has textures and tastes that take me back in time. The coarseness from the bati, sweetness from churma, fragrance of hot ghee mingling with dal… Sigh worthy.   Looks like I’m really hung on that Lasun Chuthey and try it with the Vegetable Kairi Wada. I’m happy that it is the right choice for my finger thin wada. From the main course, Methi Papad Ki Subzi strikes a chord. Yes, it is oily, but that taste is impeccable, reminding me of a time when I thought eating papad in a subzi with rotis drenched in ghee was normal.  Moong Dal Halwa, from the desserts that land on my plate, is nicely textured and fresh, without an overdose of sweetness. Pluses and minuses: You need to go really hungry to enjoy Khandani Rajdhani’s abundant, cyclic menu.   Must try: Mango Lassi, Farsans, Dal Bati Churma, Puran Poli, Khoba Roti, Paneer Ajwaini Amritsari, Rajwadi Gatta, Malpua. Bazaar - All Day Diner

$

Buzzing with life, activity and colour, Bazaar – All Day Diner is a happy place to be. It has Turkish touches, Moroccan tiles and a whole lot of kitsch with a conservative mind-set. Wooden packaging crates cover the lights, walls have laminated gunny bags, and live islands are busy dishing out orders one after the other. This ambiance makes me think of abundance. I couldn#39;t stop looking.  As I entered the restaurant, I noticed a fully loaded dessert counter, and almost started my meal backwards. Then I saw the colours of fruits explode with joie di vivre. It was the fruit counter, where juices are freshly cold pressed. I could choose any combination I liked, and add a dash of ginger, or lime or nothing at all. While I waited for my Mango Bloom, a mix of chopped mango and a muddle of ginger to make my stomach feel good, I was presented with a Carrot and Orange Soup. Of course I loved the colour and the thick, smooth texture. Orange, possessing stronger flavours, dominates, but I’m not complaining. Keeping orange alive on my palate, the Paani Puri has fresh orange juice in the chilled paani. In contrast, the Bhune Lasuni Jinga have solid overtones of garlic seeping into their warm succulence. They really don’t need any palate confusing chutney.   Lord of the Wings arrived in a platter, smothered with a shiny brown sauce, looking oh so enticing. Lucky me. Turns out the wing I chose to sink my teeth into was as delicious as it looked. I found myself chewing the meat right to the bone. Pav Bhaji Pops popped me out of my food nirvana. Not worth a try, I thought as I discarded my half eaten, fondue-d pop. Fluffy and hot the Vada Pongal’s aroma wafted its way to my nose before it arrived to my table. Half the battle was won. Boom! The golden, fluffy vada yielded with a slight crunch. Just the way I like it. And that Pongal had all its ingredients in sync. Ending my meal, I made my way to the dessert counter, and picked out the Ada Pradhaman. Earthy with jaggery and perfectly blended, it had my vote of confidence. Pluses and minuses: I love the casual-ness of Bazaar and the fact that the Grand by GRT is a hotel with a conscience. Must Try: Greek Salad, Guava Mary, Chicken 65 Wrap, Super Bowl, Mirchi Ka Halwa, Chocolate Meringue, Date Ladoo.    Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.

Canadian Crepe Company

A small place, tucked away into one of the lanes off Greams Road, very close to a watering hole, Canadian Crepe Company has elements of interest in its décor, starting with the live counter. Then, there is the restroom that’s camouflaged to look like a wall. Practical stone tiled flooring, casual seating and interesting elements like the table bases made of tiny sawed off bits of tree branches, and space saving wall lighting, wall decor. This is a pure vegetarian place. Not even eggs enter the premises. The chef has tried to get as close to healthy as he possibly can, and keep the food tasty. I find that evident as I sip the ATF (All Time Favourite). It is thick with the goodness of oatmeal, nuts, honey, flaxseeds and banana – a meal by itself. As the chef spreads out my Le French Gruyere I get a whiff of it coming my way, and it smells good. When it arrives at my table, I take one bite and imagine it to be a firangi Dosa. It has that graininess from Ragi, the smooth yet dense texture of mushrooms with a soft crunch of corn. Pepper adds pungency to the crepe. I could watch my crepe being made, it is that fresh. My Dhak Dhak Dilli crepe has paneer, and tastes a little like the Paneer Katti Roll we make at home, except that comes accompanied with a Khatta Meetha Dahi, complete with a date on top. Masala Dosa Crepe, anybody? This one’s different: spiced potato plus mayo and gun powder. It satisfies that South Indian craving quite well. I’m waiting for dessert. Cannot leave without trying the Nutella and Banana Crepe. I love it. Especially the mild bitterness from the chocolate. Pluses and minuses: Prices are competitive. The only issue is parking during the day, and the restaurant is tucked away in lane, could be a little hard to find. Must Try: Greek, Italian Job, Pattaya to Phuket, Wrap Chick of Mumbai, The King Smoothie, Ruby Red, Cinnamon Butter Sugar, Apple Crepe.

The Melting Pot: Market Cafe

$

Large and open, complete with beams and cane, the color scheme is predominantly golden brown. The Melting Pot is a space where different cuisines meet and melt in the mouth.  Three different islands form live kitchens that serve European, Pan Asian and Indian cuisine. Overlooking a lotus pond, I can choose to sit outdoors or indoors, depending on the climate. It#39;s summer, and I love being cool, so indoors it is, for me.  I watched the concentration on the faces of the chefs as they created their food, and tasted their commitment the moment I took my first bite of Ricotta Gallet with fresh mango chutney. Crisp fusion blended to perfection with ajwain and methi, set my stomach into digestion mode. I loved the sweet-sourness from the mango, aided on its way with a sip of the Tamarind and Ginger cooler, which, in Chennai#39;s scorching heat, is a welcome beverage. Headlong into my mini detox, I try the Tricky Turmeric. Bulky because of the tender coconut and papaya, I do get a hint of honey, but that sweet tender coconut is overpowered by the other giants of flavour. What totally captures my taste buds is the Pan Seared Canadian Scallops. First of all they are perfect. Then they have a smidge of this orange flavoured butter which is deliciously different. Sweetness from the green apple balances the whole dish. Porcini Flower Pot is all about the mushroom, and that risotto, rich with fungi flavours is cooked in porcini stock. Chicken lovers craving rustic food, do try the Sambalpur Bamboo Chicken. This Oriya delicacy is cooked in a bamboo shoot, sealed with banana leaves so the juices don’t escape and is served with Hajaar Chandha ghee rice, topped with sweet lime juice. I could eat this every day! For dessert I’m spoiled for choice. However, my vote goes to the Chocolate Silk Cake, which flour-less, but not calorie-less. And of course the New York style Fresh Blueberry Cheese Cake: smooth with a slight lemon zest and totally addictive. Pluses and minuses: I love every thoughtful element Chef Ashis puts on the platter. Effortless elegance whets the appetite. Must try: Local Drumstick and Basil Seed Cooler, Zafrani Paneer Tikka, Hand Crafted Cappeletti, Cast Iron Cooked Sea Bass, Stone Cooked Sea Prawn, Low Fat Yoghurt Parfait, Caramelized Banana and Bourbon Ice Cream, Tamraind Sorbet, Australian Lemon Sorbet, Mango Ras Malai.  Critic Reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.

Chakraa

Chakraa, with its glass frontage has a circle right in the middle of the restaurant, to remind you of it’s name, in case you forget. Sunlight, streaming in from the glass frontage, bounces off the red, orange beige and wood décor, telling you this is an honest place, with nothing to hide. Outside, trees swelter in the afternoon sun, with a breeze offering a hint of respite. Food aromas waft around, whetting my appetite. This time, I’m doing starting with desserts. The cutest Gulab Jamuns sit in a bowl in front of me, looking like a couple of large brown marbles in syrup. My teeth literally sink into their squishy sponginess, and I enjoy the texture that it yields. Then, I eye the Carrot Halwa, which looks exactly like it should – an orange, textured mass. One bite and I find it deliciously loaded with nuts and khoya. For the mains, there’s Chicken Biryani. Fragrant and with subtle flavours, this is clearly the chef’s forte. Prawn Pepper Masala is delicious. Succulent prawns, pepper and onion gravy with a balance of tang and punch. I love how the pungency, although there, does not overpower the other tastes. Somehow, the chef is not so great when it comes to vegetarian food, and the Palak Paneer is disappointing till it goes back to the kitchen with instructions on improvement, and presto, it actually tastes a lot better, especially with the soft, puffy phulka. Chicken Malai Tikka could be better. In its defence, the chunks of boneless chicken are soft, but the marinade has not reached the core, leaving it dry. I do get a hint of garlic, but the extra cardamom at the end of my bite leaves me overpowered. Ambitious, I reach out for the Paneer Tikka, and again find that the marinade is quite superficial and the paneer pieces are thin and dry. Pluses and minuses: Nicely done up, Chakraa has the potential of turning into a better restaurant. Food wise, like they say on school report cards, Chakraa could do so much better. Must try: Biryani – both veg and non-veg, Garlic Naan, Paneer Kulcha, Mango Ice Cream. Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.
